Evangor Foundation, a member of the Western Region Development Network of NGOs(WERENGO) is making HIV screening simple, private, and closer to home—reaching fishing communities, apprentices, and families across Shama District with self-test kits, counseling, and follow-ups in partnership with the District Health Administration. In 2023 alone, our team delivered 2,600+ HIV self-test kits through house-to-house visits, community group meetings, and beachside outreach—putting lifesaving knowledge in people’s hands.
What we did
- Distributed at scale: 1,200 kits in February, 800 more in Q3, and 600 in Q4; a Q4 consignment also included 567 male condoms.
- Met people where they are: door-to-door; during tailors’ & seamstresses’ meetings; in apprentices’ shops; at video/football centers; and with fisherfolk along the coast.
- Worked through trusted systems: close collaboration with Shama District Health Administration and GHANET to report results and improve local health outcomes.
Where we worked

Impact highlights
- Women and men reached: Thousands engaged, with strong uptake from women and steady progress with men through tailored, peer-led conversations.
- Safer choices enabled: Condom distribution paired with self-testing boosted immediate prevention options.
What we’re learning (and fixing)
Some residents hesitated to self-test or delayed using kits; others shared third-party phone numbers, complicating follow-ups. We’re addressing this with stronger identity verification in the field and couples’ disclosure support to build confidence and continuity of care.
What’s next
We’ll deepen community partnerships, expand couple-focused education, and keep scaling discreet access to HIV self-testing—so every household in Shama can know their status and choose prevention with dignity.
